Who Did Jesus Christ Claim to Be?

Jesus’ Influence in World History

Why is that?

What Did Jesus Say About Himself in Scripture?

Matthew 1:22-23 - 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:  23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us."

  1. What does “God with us” mean?

John 14:6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.”

  1. Who does Jesus say He is?
  2. Does He say the way or a way?
  3. What does that mean?

John 10:27-33

27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.  28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.  29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand.  30 I and the Father are one."  31 Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him,  32 but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?"  33 "We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."

  1. Who is Jesus referring to when he uses the expression “sheep”?
  2. From whose hand did he say no one could snatch them from?  (who else?)
  3. What relationship does Jesus claim to have with the Father?
  4. What was the reaction of the Jews to this claim?
  5. Do you think they understood what he was claiming?
  6. What was Jesus claiming about Himself?

John 5:17-18

17 Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working."  18 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

  1. What relationship did Jesus claim to have with the Father?
  2. What did the people back then think he was claiming about Himself?
  3. What were their reactions?
  4. What do you think he was claiming?

John 8:56 - 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad."  57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!"  58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"  59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

  1. Who rejoiced at seeing His day?
  2. When the Jews questioned him about seeing Abraham, what did Jesus say?

Exodus 3:14 - 14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'"

  1. Moses asked God His name.  How did God respond?
  2. How does this compare to Jesus’ response in John 8:58

After reading theses verses, who do you think Jesus was claiming to be?

Conclusion

Why was Jesus crucified?

Many people that deny Jesus is God claim that Jesus never claimed to be God.  The people of Jesus’ day heard what he was saying loud and clear, and it made them very upset, even violent, even to the point that they killed Him.  They didn’t kill Jesus for what He did, but for who He claimed to be.

Lord, Liar, or Lunatic

Jesus and the Father are One

24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

  John 4:24 (NIV)

18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

  John 1:18 (NIV)

38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.

  John 6:38 (NIV)

19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also."

  John 8:19 (NIV)

7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him." 8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." 9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

  John 14:7-10 (NIV)

1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.

  John 14:1 (NIV)

Conclusion

If you remember back to the previous lesson, who did Jesus Claim to be?  And today, we’ve also learned that Jesus claims He and the Father are one in the same.

Many people, including Jews, Muslims and Jehovah’s Witnesses will tell you that Jesus is NOT God, but that he was a prophet, or a just a good person and teacher.  Do you see a problem with that belief?

Jesus claimed to be God, so it would be impossible for him to be simply a “good teacher”, because that would make him a liar, which means he couldn’t be a “good teacher”.

Lord, Liar, or Lunatic

There are only 3 things Jesus could have been.

C.S. Lewis

“A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher.  He would either be a lunatic – on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg – or else he would be the Devil of Hell.  You must make your choice.  Either this man was, and is, the Son of God or else a madman or something worse.  You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God.  But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher.  He has not left that open to us.  He did not intend to.”

Don’t let anybody ever tell you that Jesus was just a good teacher, because that is not an option.

Who Do You Say That I Am?

But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

  John 20:31 (NIV)

  1. Why did John write this gospel?
  2. What’s the result when we believe or trust in Jesus as the Son of God?
  3. Why is it important to believe Jesus is who he claimed to be – God?

Christ’s Seven Great “I Am’s”

In each of the below:

  1. What was Christ’s claim?
  2. How does it benefit us?

Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

  John 6:35 (NIV)

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

  John 8:12 (NIV)

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.

  John 10:9 (NIV)

"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  John 10:11 (NIV)

25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

  John 11:25-26 (NIV)

Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  John 14:6 (NIV)

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

  John 15:5 (NIV)

Conclusion

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.

  Rev 3:20 (NIV)

If there’s never been a specific moment in your life in which you have received Jesus as Lord of your life, I want you to think about why for a moment.  Not out loud, but just think, if you believe what you’ve read in the Bible about Jesus and who he claimed to be, what is your reason for not accepting Him.

Ask somebody who has trusted in Jesus about their experience.  Was it hard to do?  How did it make them feel?

Receiving the Offer of Life

What Has God Given Us?

11 And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.  13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.

  1 John 5:11-13 (NASB)

  1. What has God given us?
  2. Where is eternal life found?
  3. If you have the Son, what else do you have?
  4. Can you have one without the other?
  5. Why did John write these verses?

  1. When does eternal life begin?
  2. What does eternal mean?
  3. Could you ever lose something that was eternal?
  4. Have you trusted Jesus and invited Him into your heart?

12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,

  John 1:12 (NASB)

  1. What have you become?
  2. What category are you in?

20 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me.

  Rev 3:20 (NASB)

  1. Where is Jesus right now in relation to you?

12 "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved."

  Acts 4:12 (NASB)

  1. Where is salvation to be found?
  2. Can it be found in anyone else?

Conclusion

Only in Jesus Christ can we have eternal life.  When we put our trust in Him, we are saved by receiving His life.  For those of you that have trusted in Jesus, the natural thing to do is thank Him daily for paying for your sins by dying on the cross and giving you eternal life.

For those of you that have never asked Jesus to come into your life:

·       Think about why you haven’t.

·       Think about the choice you are making, by not accepting Jesus’ gift of salvation.

·       Think about what that means.  What does it mean to not have eternal life in Jesus?

·       Also, realize that God wants everyone to be saved; Jesus stands at the door and knocks right now.

·       You can make the decision at any time to ask Jesus into your life.

·       If any of you ever make that decision, tell somebody.

·       If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask one of us.  We’d be more than happy to talk to you about it.

Biblical Prophecies About Jesus Christ

Place of Birth

Micah 5:2 (NIV) – 700 B.C.

2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

Matthew 2:1 (NIV)

1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem

Born of a Virgin

Isaiah 7:14 (NIV) – 700 B.C.

14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Matthew 1:18 (NIV)

18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.

Ministry of Miracles

Isaiah 35:5-6 (NIV) – 700 B.C.

5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.  Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.

Luke 7:22 (NIV)

22So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

Entry Into Jerusalem

Zechariah 9:9 (NIV) – 500 B.C.

9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Matthew 21:2,6-7 (NIV)

2saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me…  6The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them.

Betrayed By a Friend

Psalm 41:9 (NIV) – 1000 B.C.

9                      Even my close friend, whom I trusted,

          he who shared my bread,

has lifted up his heel against me.

John 13:18-21 (NIV)

18“I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: ‘He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.’ 19“I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. 20I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.” 21After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me.”

Blood Money

Zechariah 11:12-13 (NIV) – 500 B.C.

12I told them, “If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver. 13And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter.

Matthew 26:14-15 (NIV)

14Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests 15and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty silver coins.

Matthew 27:3-10 (NIV)

3When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. 4“I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.” 5So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. 6The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty silver coins, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”

His Sufferings

Micah 5:1 (NIV) – 700 B.C.

1 Marshal your troops, O city of troops, for a siege is laid against us.  They will strike Israel’s ruler                on the cheek with a rod.

Psalm 69:21 (NIV) – 1000 B.C.

21 They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.

Isaiah 52:14 (NIV) – 500 B.C.

14 Just as there were many who were appalled at him - his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness

Matthew 27:27-34, 48 (NIV)

27Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. 32As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). 34There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it… 48Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink.

No Broken Bones

Psalm 34:20 (NIV) – 1000 B.C.

20 he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.

John 19:31-36 (NIV)

31Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.  32The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 35The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”

They Will Cast Lots for His Clothing

Psalms 22:18

Victory Over Death

Psalm 16:9-10 (NIV) – 1000 B.C.

9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, 10 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

Acts 2:22-32 (NIV)

22“Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.  23This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25David said about him: “‘I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, 27 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.’ 29“Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. 32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.

There were over 300 prophecies made in the Old Testament about Jesus.  These all took place hundreds of years before Jesus ever lived.

Imagine 100,000,000,000,000,000 silver dollars were spread across the state of Texas.  They would cover the land 2 feet deep.  Imagine somebody marked on one of them with a black marker.  Then you were blindfolded and told to try to pick the silver dollar that was marked.  You would have as good of a chance at picking that 1 coin that all the prophets had of having their prophecies fulfilled in 1 person.

It was no accident.

The 70 Weeks of Daniel

The 69 Weeks of Daniel

Daniel 9:25 (NIV) – 535 BC
25“Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.

  1. What had to occur before the Anointed One comes?
  2. How many ‘sevens’ were there to be from the decree until the Anointed One?

The ‘sevens’ in Daniel equals 7 years.  So 7 + 62 = 69 sevens = 483 years.

Nehemiah 2:1-5 (NIV) – 430 BC
1In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before; 2so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.”  I was very much afraid, 3but I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”  4The king said to me, “What is it you want?”  Then I prayed to the God of heaven, 5and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my fathers are buried so that I can rebuild it.”

  1. What year of the reign of Artaxerxes was Nehemiah’s request made to rebuild the city?

King Artaxerxes reigned for 40 years (465-425 BC), so the twentieth year of his reign was 445 BC.

The Hebrew month of Nisan is our March.  The 1st of Nisan fell on March 14, so we know that King Artaxerxes’ decree to rebuild Jerusalem was given to Nehemiah on March 14, 445 BC.

The first 7 was 49 years, and that is exactly how long it took to rebuild the city of Jerusalem.

In the calendar used by Daniel, there are 360 days in a year.  So 483 years X 360 days = 173,880 days.

If we start at March 14, 445 BC, and move forward 173,880 days, that puts us at April 6, 32 AD.

This is the date Jesus made His triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem, riding on a donkey!

Events Following the 69 Weeks

Daniel 9:26 (NIV) – 535 BC
26After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing,  The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.

  1. What 2 events did Daniel indicate would happen after the date April 6, 32 AD?

After His triumphal entry, Jesus was “cut off” and crucified.

In 70 AD, the Roman king Titus attacked and completely destroyed the city of Jerusalem along with the Temple.

The Final Week

Daniel 9:24 (NIV) – 535 BC
24“Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy.

The is talking about what will happen afterwards.  Jesus will return and put an end to sin and wickedness.

The Rapture

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (NIV)
16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

The Return of Christ

Revelation 19:11-21 (NIV)
11I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. 12His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:

KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

17And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God, 18so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and mighty men, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, small and great.”

19Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against the rider on the horse and his army. 20But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped his image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. 21The rest of them were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.

Revelation 20:1-15 (NIV)
1And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. 2He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.

4I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5(The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. 6Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

7When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison 8and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. 9They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

11Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
